World Travel Statistics

More and more people are traveling the world. The most common response to the question “What would you do if you didn’t have to work?” is “World travel.” So, if so many people want to travel the world, and so many people think it’s truly impossible to get away for long enough to really enjoy it, how then do we bridge this gap? In order to understand peoples concern, let’s take a look at my personal world travel statistics.

Firstly, a brief background on our world travel adventure. My wife and I took a year off and moved from our townhouse outside of San Francisco to Southeast Asia. From there we traveled though Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and Indonesia before heading to India and Nepal. After a month trekking in Nepal we caught a train to Beijing, then the Trans Manchurian Railway to Europe before flying home.  All in all we bought three plane tickets: San Francisco to Bangkok, Bangkok to Mumbai, and Frankfurt to San Francisco. All travel between was either by boat, rail or bus.

Here are our world travel statistics:

Average monthly living expenses: $1300. This included staying in moderately priced hotels, and eating street food half of the time, with the occasional big night out. We didn’t really drink that much, which would have driven our costs up significantly (for some reason, a beer can cost more than a bed in some parts of the world).

Visa requirements: $80 per month. Our first month in Thailand was free, while the month in Nepal was $80 plus $20 for entry into the Everest region.

Total for three flights (both of us):  $2700. In retrospect, we could have gotten a better deal if we had booked ahead, but we honestly did not know where we were headed.

Total for train travel: $2000.  Over half of this amount was for the Trans Mongolian, which considering we crossed eight time zones wasn’t a bad deal.

Total cost for our round the world travel adventure? $21, 260. Just to put these world travel statistics in perspective, if we had stayed at home our expenses would have been 22,880.

Hope this helps inspire your next big trip.
