Travel Compression Socks
Travel compression socks are a great way to alleviate leg pain associated with long flights. They generally come in different compression strengths, between 10-50+ mmHg (millimeters of mercury, it’s a measure of pressure, the higher the level, the more pressure). You can usually get up to 20 mmHg travel compression socks over the counter, but will need a prescription to get anything tighter.
CAUTION: Do not use compression socks if you are diabetic, as their intended effect is to increase circulation of the blood.
Many travelers will also use compression socks when hiking, especially in high altitudes. It is safe to wear them throughout the day (if they are over the counter) and many people enjoy them even when they aren’t traveling.
Travel compression socks are a God send on overseas flights, and are one of those things that once you’ve started using, you can’t imagine flying without them. My advice is to pack several on your next adventure; one to wear on the plane, and another for use that involves high altitudes. Also, if you plan on doing some trekking, cycling, or any other activity that may result in soreness, it’s a good idea to put on your travel compression socks at the end of the day. If you are interested in the health benefits of travel compression socks, but are concerned about the fashion, don’t worry; they come in a variety of styles, such as athletic, knee high, and yes, even pantyhose. |
