Roof Top Tents
Roof top tents are a great way to travel, particularly for families. I have used them extensively on a road trip across the USA, and found the experience an eye opener; I used to think that roof top tents were large, clumsy and a total waste of time. However, after spending a month sleeping in one, I’m officially converted. Here are some the main benefits why you should consider roof top over your traditional tents.
Accessibility. One of traditional tents shortcomings is the setup time. I know that as they’ve evolved from the basic a-frame to the more advanced setups that they’ve become easier, but having to unpack and set up your tent every day can be a drag. With a roof top, you can literally set it up in under ten seconds. If you can fall out of bed, you can set these up.
Cleanliness. Rather than set up your tent in the dirt (which may become mud overnight) you can sleep in an elevated position, away from puddles, insects, and other critters. This lends itself nicely to its accessibility; it’s easy to get to, and it’s clean when you get back to it. After cleaning well over a hundred tents by hand, I can honestly say this was the dealmaker for me.
Health. In addition to avoiding insects, you also remove the risk of tripping over a wire, slamming your thumb with a hammer, and/or falling through the tent. OK, it’s a minor point, but a point nonetheless. In addition, mental health is important: you’re a lot less likely to get steamed about setting up your roof top tent than you are dealing in the mud with a traditional tent.
Long lasting. In all honesty, you simply aren’t putting the same strain on roof top tents that are with your current tent. Because they are made with hard shells, they last much longer than an a-frame, which means you can enjoy your tent for years to come.
