I have purchased tents brand new and used, and must admit that there is not much difference between the two. It’s a lot like a new vs. used car: sometimes you can’t help but feel you paid all that extra money for that “new tent smell.” Either that, or you’re paying to avoid that “old tent smell.”
My first location is always the local army surplus store. They are able to provide quality army grade material and camping gear at a price that cannot be beat. Also, if you’re a total gear-head, they’ve got every known device available, and for cheap. I found a belt that cost two dollars, looked brand new, and has lasted over five years (in fact, I’m wearing it right now). Craigslist is always a good place for camping equipment. Lord knows there are always a large number of folks trying to clean out their garages. Before buying a used tent, make sure to check the zippers; they should be wide and smooth when opening. If they do jam, a little soapy water will alleviate the problem, without adding the nasty smell of lubricants (at least the mechanical kind). Walmart has several great tents from Coleman, Ozark Trail and others for well under $100, plus you have the option of purchasing online. Their website has a great rundown of all the camping tents, including dimensions, number of rooms, how many people can sleep in it, and what colors they come in. I recommend searching these three locations, in this order, to find the best discount camping tents. Keep in mind that the first two are used tents, while Walmart’s are brand new; in other words, you should expect to pay more with Walmart than the surplus store or Craigslist. |
