A Frame Tents

A frame tents are like sharks; they are both built so perfectly that the basic structure never changes. While there are many other tent styles out there, some so easy to setup they practically fold themselves, a simple a-frame tent is not only easy to set up, but last much longer. I used to organize camping trips, and will never forget how easy it was to repair the old tents; you can replace all the poles and have it up and running in less than half an hour.

Many people struggle with the zippers from time to time. While this is not specific to a-frame tents, the remedy is the same: rather than use WD-40 or some other lubricant, you can often get by using warm soapy water. The benefits of this are two fold: first, you avoid the smell of lubricants (many of which are unhealthy to breathe) and the soap acts as a natural bug repellant.

Another issue with tents is that the poles may snap. Save yourself the trouble of fixing a pole in the rain, and bring at least two replacement poles for your a-frame. To repair the broken poles, you’ll need two tools: a set of wire cutters (or anything sharp, such as a hunting knife, scissors, hatchet, etc.) and a spool of tent wire (purchased at a camping store, or army surplus). Weave the wire through the poles and cut it so as to leave about six inches of wire out the other end. Knot the end together, and voila! Good as new.

I find the best place to purchase a-frame tents are army surplus stores. Here you can find really good quality tents for far less than yuppie camper stores like REI. Make sure you set the tents up at the store before purchasing; ensure there are no leaks, and no unpleasant odors or excessive dirt.
