Thailand Domestic Flights
Using Thailand domestic flights as part of your overall travel strategy can be a great deal. I’ve met dozens of travelers who have used this to save a bundle of cash, and most of them didn’t even plan it that way!
Having said that, though, you will be better off if you plan your trip (or at least the flights) before arriving in Thailand. There are many multi segment bargains that are offered outside of Thailand.
The major airlines for domestic Thai flights are Thai Air Asia, Thailand Domestic Flights (seriously, can you go wrong with a name like that?) and Bangkok Airways. Another worth mentioning is Silk Air, which is owned by Singapore Airlines (one of my favorites to fly with in Asia).
Remember that if you are flying into Thailand, it would be wise to check for consolidators rates (airline wholesalers) for the international segments. Purchase these as a simple return trip ticket, then start to piece together the domestic portions
Though you may initially want to purchase domestic flights and jet set your way around the country, you should consider taking the train. Thailand’s rail service is slower than the trains in Europe and North America, but this gives you time to appreciate the countryside. They also connect with buses and boats to get you to islands such as Ko Samui and Ko Phi Phi.
Did I mention they’re dirt cheap? You can grab a train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai for less than five dollars; try beating that with a domestic flight. In conclusion, domestic flights in Thailand can be a good bet, as they may be cheaper if ticketed separately. However, flights will not be as cheap as a train, though it will certainly be faster. |
