A breakdown on flight departures from Heathrow Airport

Anyone who has ever flown internationally at least once in their life has probably found themselves in London Heathrow airport. The single busiest airport in the world, Heathrow services over 67 million passengers a year with over 90 airlines offering domestic and international flights around the world. It is, in many ways, the central hub of the world, connecting Great Britain to Europe, Asia and the Americas.  While it isn’t as confusing as some smaller airports (Miami for example) flight departures from Heathrow can be somewhat confusing, especially seeing that it is a common location for infrequent flyers.

In order to successfully navigate Heathrow, you must first figure out the terminal your departure is from. There are five terminals, each generally servicing specific airlines:

TERMINAL 1 – Aer Lingus, British Midland, El Al, United and South African
TERMINAL 2 – Aerolineas Argentinas, Air France, Alitalia, American, Lufthansa, Malev Hungarian, TAP Portugal
TERMINAL 3 – Air Canada, Air China, Nippon, American, Cathay Continental, Japan, Korean, Singapore, Thai, Turkish and Virgin Atlantic
TERMINAL 4 –  British Airways, Kenya, KLM, Qantas and Sri Lankan Airlines
TERMINAL 5 – British Airways

As you can see, there is some overlap, so make sure to double check your flight with each terminal. Also, keep in mind that takes roughly fifteen minutes to get around the whole airport via their tram, so plan ahead. A word to the wise: many people will look at their own flights estimated time of departure. To get the truth, look at the gate your flight is departing from, THEN look at the estimated arrival time of the next plane. These estimates tend to be far more accurate, especially if you factor in time for boarding.
