Top 10 Travel Destinations

How many times he seemed a list for the top 10 travel destinations?  We’ve all seen several variations of this theme: whether it’s the “top ten Romantic travel destinations” or the “top ten honeymoon travel destinations” there is a certain intrinsic appeal to these types of lists.  After all, are we all looking for inspiration?  What better way to that be provided at a list of things to do before you die?  Therefore, in this spirit I humbly offer my own top ten of travel destinations:

New Orleans.  Known as the city that care forgot, New Orleans is a place unlike anywhere else in the world.  It is a cultural infusion of French, Spanish, Caribbean, African, and American culture and cuisine.  It is also the home of jazz, and the birthplace of jazz legend Louis Armstrong.

Christchurch, New Zealand.  One of the cultural centers of New Zealand, though without the pretentiousness of Auckland. Christchurch is well known for his botanical Gardens, classical art gallery, and its town square.  It is this last location where a most interesting character known as The Wizard sets up shop at noon to give his daily lectures.

Cork, Ireland. There is no other place in the Green Isle like Cork, well known for its fashion, pubs, and theatre. There are over twenty playhouses in the city, and can be seen at a reasonable price.

Sydney, Australia. I have always thought of Sydney as what San Francisco would be, if the weather were better.  You can hang out at the bars in Kings Cross, layouts on Manly Beach, walk-through darling harbor, and of course, catch a matinee at the Sydney Opera House.

Buenos Aries, Argentina.  An elegant combination of Latin and European culture, not to mention some of the best steaks in the world.  Take time to savor some Chilean wine, and work up the courage to take some tango classes.

San Francisco, United States.  Arguably the best city in America.  Marvel at the hippies on Haight Ashbury, walk across the Golden gate Bridge, savor fine Italian cuisine in North Beach, and don’t miss a tour of Alcatraz ( an absolute must-see). This was the first place that came to mind for my top 10 travel destinations.

Kathmandu, Nepal.  Part of the famed hippie trail, Kathmandu is at once a throwback to the early 1970s, as well as a chance to see a country moving forward from a turbulent decade of assassinations and Maoist rebels.  From here you can catch a train into the Himalaya, India, or onwards to Tibet and China.

Key West, United States.  On a sunny day in Key West, and there’s no shortage of them there, you can see Cuba.  Enjoy the beautiful downtown setting, and make sure to catch a booze cruise out into the ocean where you can snorkel or jet skied the day away in this classic Hemingway atmosphere.  Be prepared, there are several clothing optional bars downtown!

Paris, France.  One of the most beautiful cities I’ve ever seen, and by far the most beautiful at night ( which explains how it earned the nickname “city of light”).  While there, don’t miss a trip to the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower and the Notre Dame Cathedral.

Rome, Italy.  All roads used to lead here, and for good reason.  Rome still remains one of the most fascinating locations on the globe today while there, don’t miss the Coliseum ( built in 72 AD), St. Peter’s Basilica and the Spanish steps. Be sure to pack a comfortable pair of sneakers, as Rome is definitely a walking city.

Well, there you have it, my top 10 travel destinations.  I hope they inspire you to create your own, and hopefully at a few of these listed here on your wish list.
