Famous Thailand Food
Thailand is famous for its food. Sure, there are other attractions it is (in)famous for, but food is right up with the beaches. Thai food is considered a world cuisine, up there with French, Italian, Chinese and Morrocan. The blend of chili pastes seared in oil with garlic and coconut milk can bring tears to your eyes.
Here’s a few tips on what to expect, as well as a list of the most famous Thailand food.
Make sure to keep an open stomach. Walking through the street markets you will encounter exotic flavors and ingredients (did they really just put snake in that?); what may seem distasteful to you may be a local delicacy. Outside of health concerns, try as many different foods as possible. To this day, some of the best meals I’ve had in Thailand were the ones I still can’t identify.
Local spice vs. Western spice. You can’t help this one, and maybe you wouldn’t want to anyway. In Thailand, you’re lucky to get food at half the heat the locals get. If you really like spicy food, you will have to really drive the point home with the staff: explain you want the dish as they would prepare it for themselves.
Famous Thailand Food
Massaman curry. Still one of my favorites. A curry consisting of coconut milk, potatoes, soy sauce, garlic, chilis, and peanuts (sometimes you’ll find pineapple, too). Absolutely delicious!
Satay. This is usually either chicken or vegetables on a satay stick (think skinny kebob stick) that is grilled and served with a peanut sauce. Very high in fat and flavor!
Somtam. A dish featuring ground papaya with lime juice, garlic, shrimp, cherry tomatoes and roasted peanuts. There are variations of course, but this one has always been my favorite. Eating the food in Thailand can be as adventuresome as traveling across it. These may be some of the most famous Thailand food, but take the time to stop and smell the lemongrass, and enjoy! |
