Road Trip Vacation Planning

Road trip vacation planning can done simply and efficiently. My past job was a cross country tour guide, and there is no better way to perfect planning a road trip than being responsible for thirteen people from around the world. You have to ensure their safety (firstly) and make sure they have a great time, all the while balancing the logistics and tempers involved. In my experience, here are some tips that make road trip vacation planning a breeze:

Plan an outline, not a masterpiece. So many people spend hours, if not days planning their perfect vacation, only to end up missing the whole point of the road trip: exploring. If there’s one thing I’ve learned on the road it’s that the best experiences stem from the unexpected. I once drove cross country and could not wait to Boston, which ended up no where near the top of my list in hindsight. Meanwhile, Monument Valley was the surprise hit of the summer, and this was a place I’d never even heard of before!

Hit the road early. The key to planning a solid road trip is to get up early and knock out some miles. Assuming you are driving an average of 55 mph with the occasional gas/pit stop you can very easily cover 300 miles by early afternoon. This will give you time to enjoy the day and the destination. The only exception to this is Las Vegas, which is a great city to drive into at night, as it certainly lacks its glamour in broad daylight.

Teamwork is key. You can accomplish so much more if each person pulls their weight. For example, one person can call ahead for reservations, another can plot the best route on the map, and yet another can catch up on some rest (which is a great way to maintain good team vibes).

In conclusion, road trip vacation planning should be general in its scope, and people should work together to get up early and hit the road. Follow these simple tips and you’ll have a great road trip.
