First and foremost, as a former travel agent, I can certainly attest to the benefits of using a local specialist: in short, there is nothing like the peace of mind that accompanies an ever present expert that is one phone call away.
On the other hand, a specialized agent may not be what you're looking for. It all depends on what you want out of your trip. For example, let's say you want to visit Italy for the first time and see the sights. If you're looking for a checklist on what to see (Leaning Tower of Piza, Venice canals, Coliseum, etc.) you most certainly don't need a travel agent to point these attractions out; just follow the tourist trails and you're set.
If you want to find the best restaurant in Rome, follow your nose. Or ask a local.
So where does a specialist come in handy? In my experience, it is in one of two instances:
- Your trip is niche. If you are interested in fine Italian wines, you may want to take a tour with other aspiring oenophiles, set up by your local specialist. If your trip is intended to study your geneology, it would certainly behoove you to ask a travel agent to help plan your route.
- You absolutely, positively do not want to handle the logistics yourself. A friend of mine swears by self-powered travel; she has been to dozens of countries and never asked for help from a travel agent (though she was always ready to listen). This approach went out the window when she found herself responsible for planning a two week trip through Italy with her new husband, both their parents, and a few cousins thrown in for good measure.
